Any Film and Video Production Technology program student can apply for the scholarship. Applicants must have an instructor recommendation and submit an essay describing how the program will help them serve the community. The Nixon Leaders Center was established in 2010 to focus on increasing graduation, retention, and transfer rates in underrepresented student populations. To accomplish this, the center increases student exposure to mentorship, educational opportunities, professionalism, civic opportunities, and networking. In addition, the center staff offers assistance with scheduling, scholarship applications, college transfer applications, college tours, and referrals to additional campus resources.

“We are grateful for this generous gift,” said Donterio Perkins, Diversity Success Coordinator. “These funds will allow us to help more students and improve our programs to support their academic and career aspirations. In 2023 we helped over 350 students; with this donation, we can support many more.”

Wilmington, NC – Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) is excited to introduce the Sandra Collette Scholarship in Media & Communications, a $2,000 annual scholarship created and funded by the Coach Bill Dooley Education Foundation (CBDEF). Named after media veteran Sandra “Sandy” Collette, the scholarship supports students pursuing media and communications studies and recognizes academic excellence, positive attitudes, and community involvement.

Sandy’s 45-year media and public relations career includes leadership roles in Houston, Dallas, and Wilmington. Locally, she is known for her work as the publicity chairperson for the North Carolina Azalea Festival, a role she served in for twenty years. She has also served in various community leadership roles, including the United Way, March of Dimes, Hope Abounds, Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame, Coach Bill Dooley Education Foundation, and many others.

“We are honored to establish the Sandra Collette Scholarship at Cape Fear Community College,” said Tom Hackler, CBDEF Treasurer. “This scholarship will serve as a lasting tribute to Sandy’s legacy, leading to the growth and development of future leaders in the media and communications industries.”

Wilmington, NC – Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) proudly announces a substantial and transformative $3 million donation from Dan Saklad. This exceptional contribution will be used to name CFCC’s newest building at 319 N. Front Street. The building will be named the Dan and Sheila Saklad Health and Human Services Center. This donation symbolizes the Saklad Family’s deep commitment to education and healthcare.

“I am honored to contribute to Cape Fear Community College, a longstanding beneficiary of our support,” said Dan Saklad. “This investment further strengthens our regional healthcare workforce, a profession near and dear to Sheila and my family. Through various fundraisers, including a community yard sale, Darius’ family and friends have raised over $10,000 to help aspiring chefs fulfill their dreams. A scholarship of $500 will be awarded to two Cape Fear Community College Culinary Arts students each academic year. Eligible students must be enrolled in one of CFCC’s Culinary Arts programs and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

“Some people enter our lives for a second or a short period, and that’s OK,” said Bernard Brunson. “Then there are those who come into your life for a lifetime, whose legacy will always live on, and that is our Darius. I always taught him to focus on the people that are there for the good, bad, and the ugly, the ones that are always there for you. We started the Darius R. Brunson Memorial Scholarship to continue our son’s legacy and be there for students pursuing his passion of cooking.”

Wilmington, NC – Cape Fear Community College is thrilled to announce that we have raised $1,046,994 for nursing scholarships, thanks to the generous support of individual and corporate donors in the community. This amount will provide an additional 52 nursing scholarships for our students, bringing the total number of nursing scholarships to approximately 130 per year.

CFCC’s nursing programs are highly respected and have been recognized for producing some of the best nurses in the region and across the state. These programs are dedicated to providing education and hands-on skill experiences to students to prepare them to enter the workforce and fill a demand for skilled nursing professionals.

“I continue to be inspired by the generosity of our community and their support of Cape Fear Community College,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “I believe that investing in our nursing students through scholarship opportunities not only benefits the individual student but also has a ripple effect on the entire community. It’s #FoundationFriday and we are pleased to announce the Wilmington Contractors Association (WCA) presented $9,000 to the CFCC Foundation to benefit the Wallace and Virginia West Endowed Scholarship fund and the Thurman Watts Book Scholarship. The West scholarship, established in 1999, honors two longtime administrators of the Wilmington Contractors Association (WCA), one of the oldest trade associations in North Carolina. WCA also supports the Thurman Watts Book Scholarship which honors Thurman Watts, who worked for 29 years with John S. Clark Company LLC and served as a former president of the WCA. Since 1999, WCA has raised over $157,000 to support our students!
