Participants will learn basic safety procedures, tool identification and usage, construction mathematics, and techniques for framing walls, partitions, roofs, doors, and windows. Additional topics include foundation layout and flooring system construction. Students will engage in hands-on construction projects to reinforce learning, applying their skills in real-world scenarios.

Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The total cost for enrollment is $190. The class is open to any student age 16 and older (students under the age of 18 will require parental consent for participation).

Beginning February 4, 2025, a new 16-week Automotive Technician class will start at Flow Cadillac of Wilmington. Classes will meet two evenings per week, utilizing the dealership’s state-of-the-art facilities and vehicles. Through this partnership, students gain real-world training that prepares them for entry-level technician positions. At the end of the semester, students can interview at Flow Cadillac, providing a direct pathway from classroom to career.

“We are excited to partner with Flow Cadillac of Wilmington and expand our program into another local dealership,” said Jim Morton, CFCC President. “This partnership gives our students unmatched access to industry resources and career readiness opportunities that can jumpstart their automotive careers.”

In addition to this new partnership, Stevenson Hendrick Honda will host its fifth CFCC Automotive Technician class beginning March 10. Stevenson Hendrick Honda has been a longstanding partner of the program, contributing to the training and employment success of many CFCC graduates.

This program starts with a two-part series, providing an excellent introduction to the essential skills and knowledge required to become an aviation mechanic. The first course, Aviation Maintenance – General I, will run from January 27 to June 16, 2025, with classes on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This course introduces students to the basic principles of aviation maintenance and explains the tasks that technicians perform on the job. Upon completion, students will understand fundamental aviation maintenance concepts and regulations and will be able to perform tasks using the proper tools and equipment.

Instructor Christopher Sperry has over 20 years of experience in military aviation. He brings extensive hands-on expertise in maintenance procedures, systems troubleshooting, and operational safety protocols. His in-depth knowledge of aircraft maintenance ensures effective training and skill development for aspiring aviation technicians.

Cape Fear Community College is working to assist Tru Colors employees after the company’s closure last week. CFCC provides resources and training to help individuals looking to enhance their employment skills.

“Cape Fear Community College is well-positioned to support Tru Colors employees as they take the next step in their careers,” said CFCC President Jim Morton. “Our workforce development team is talking with employees about training options at Cape Fear and helping them navigate the process. Tru Colors employees have already committed to changing the trajectories of their lives, and we are happy to help them continue on a positive path.”

“Tru Colors wants to assist their employees and welcomed us in to help,” said John Downing, CFCC’s Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development. “Mt. Calvary Center will provide outreach and case management services, and the Cape Fear Workforce Development Board will provide financial assistance for training at CFCC to eligible Tru Colors employees. This collaborative effort will ensure Tru Colors employees have great options in the future.”

Interview and Job Training

On Friday, CFCC staff worked with Tru Colors employees to review resume writing and interview skills and inform them about educational and training opportunities available at CFCC. On Monday, September 12, Mount Calvary Center, the Cape Fear Workforce Development Board, and local hiring managers visited Tru Colors to meet potential employees and discuss options for financial assistance for job training.

Khalilah (KO) Olokunola, the former Chief People Officer at Tru Colors, is assisting Tru Colors’ employees in their transition. She is thankful for the partnership.

“This is an opportunity to connect in a safe space and spark conversations that may direct employees toward a new path. WILMINGTON, NC — Cape Fear Community College celebrated the graduation of eighteen Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) students on Friday, July 1, 2022. The students from five counties throughout North Carolina participated in the five-week course and passed the state exam.

Offered to detention officers from across the region, the state-mandated course load requires 174 hours of instruction, but these students completed 196 hours of instruction. Extra hours were built to account for subject control techniques, contraband searches, a mock trial for the investigative process, and extra time for review sessions.

“This training is essential to ensure the safety and security of those working in detention facilities and those confined,” said CFCC Director of Law Enforcement Programs Tim Fuss.

The course consists of 100 hours of online and practical skills designed for current Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and ambulance service personnel to expand their skills and career opportunities and make a difference in the communities they work.

Through the Community Paramedicine course, students will train to:

• Help individuals overcome barriers to accessing and benefiting from health services.
• Serve as advocates, facilitators, liaisons, and resource coordinators.
• Provide appropriate care for emergencies, evaluation, triage, chronic disease management, and mental healthcare, as well as prevention.
• Mentor and empower residents, communities, and health care systems to achieve positive outcomes and reach optimal wellness.

Upon course completion, students will be able to validate their competency through the Community Paramedic Certification exam.

CFCC was selected to present among hundreds of proposals submitted for consideration. “This consideration speaks to the excellence of our law enforcement programs and illustrates the steadfast commitment of its faculty and staff who strive to deliver high-quality training and address public safety needs in our community and beyond,” said CFCC President Jim Morton.

The College’s presentation, “Building an Officer Mental Health Wellness Culture,” was presented to approximately 85 participants from across the nation and world.

The presentation’s training objectives included:

• Discussing factors that contribute to mental/emotional well-being
• Recognizing indicators that mental/emotional well-being may be affected
• Developing a strategy that will contribute to mental/emotional well-being

“Being able to present at the conference was a tremendous honor for CFCC and its law enforcement programs,” said Fuss. “Mental health within the public safety community is needed to bring awareness to an issue with alarming numbers. We train on response to calls, tactics, and searches but spend little time training in this area.”

CFCC’s Essentials Program is a free program that offers academic and career training to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The students must desire to improve their reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills and have a willingness to work. Tony was ready to begin his journey towards a career and independence.

Upward Momentum

Each student in the Essentials Program is initially tested in reading and math. Students test again every 100-150 hours of instruction to measure their progress. When Tony started the program in 2019, he tested at a National Reporting System (NRS) level two. Now, a level three in both subjects, Tony’s instructors could not be more proud.

“I have always had confidence in the potential of our students to succeed in a career path and become more independent,” said Adult Basic Education Instructor Mary Wofford. “Tony has accomplished both at an incredible speed!”

During his two years in the program, Tony improved his reading and comprehension skills along with his math skills. He also learned how to budget his finances. These essential skills improve Tony’s ability to work and live on his own.

“This program has helped me reach some of my goals,” Tony said. “I am a lot better with money, and when I read a book, I’m actually able to understand what the words mean.”

But, he is not finished with his learning journey. Tony’s next step in the program is to prepare for career pathway classes.

Toward the Dream Career Pathway

Tony currently works in the laundry department at Autumn Care, a senior living facility. “Some people don’t think laundry is fun, but in a certain way, I do,” shared Tony. “But, I’ve told people this is not a long-term job. I would like to work in a phone or computer store. Apparently, I’m very good at fixing things.”

His instructors agree that he is a mastermind when it comes to phone technology. “Tony has taught me some things that I didn’t know my phone could do,” Wofford explained. “And he’s very patient when explaining things. He never gets frustrated.”

Tony’s dream job, however, is to be a 9-1-1 dispatcher. He is working hard to further improve his reading and math skills to enroll in the telecommunicator course, which is offered through the Academic and Career Readiness department.

“I love having Tony in our Essentials program. He is committed to attending and focused on improving his academic skills,” said Essentials and High School Equivalency Coordinator Kathy Martinez. “Being a part of his journey and seeing his accomplishments is a wonderful thing!”
